M3AAWG – Foundation for Growth

Challenge

The Messaging Malware Mobile Anti-Abuse Working Group (M3AAWG) had a very uncertain future when it held its first official meeting in May 2004 in Washington, D.C.  At that first meeting were the five founding members and a number of invited guests from email service providers and their network carriers.

The founding board retained Jerry Upton as their executive director, an experienced industry executive with enough association experience to know that he needed a solid operations and headquarters base to have any chance of growing the organization.

Solution

Upton invited several AMCs to bid on M3AAWG’s service contract.  L&M provided the most scalable solution, recognizing that a new organization could not predict how fast they would grow and the board was unwilling to make a contractual commitment they didn’t feel they could honor.

The L&M solution was a service package including:  bookkeeping/accounting, membership management, headquarters location, meetings support and a simple Internet presence for a website and email list services. Our experienced executive directors were also on call to assist and counsel Upton or the board of directors at any time.  We quoted a fixed fee that fit their budget and removed any surprises about what their costs would be.

We were also very involved assisting Upton with the identification of an independent website developer and hosting site.  The organization recognized early on the need for a custom and highly secure website and email list communications.  Aeronet Communications was the selected technology vendor and they remain M3AAWG’s service provider today.

As the organization grew we were able to increase staffing capacity to meet their growth and to add new services as needed to support their expanding requirements.

Results

The results are evident in the organization’s current output and production:

  • Grew from 5 founding members to 265 today
  • Grew from a handful of representatives to 3,700 member representatives;
  • Meeting attendance grew from 30 or so at the first meeting to over 600 registered for the June 2020 virtual meeting, which is an all-time high;
  • The organization grew from 3 working committees to 16; and
  • The scope of their work expanded from just email spam to messaging and malware abuse.

According to Jerry Upton:  “Since our founding in 2004, L&M has been an important part of our growth and success.  L&M has provided me, other contractors and our members a strong and reliable back-office operation, handling accounting, meeting support, membership management, and more.”

Today M3AAWG is recognized as the largest anti-abuse consortium in the world.

L&M is proud and honored by our 16 year relationship with M3AAWG.
